Q: Do you accept fiction, memoirs or erotica?
A: No, never. We have found that the best sellers are single-interest nonfiction topics: how-tos, etc. Defined, single topics are best because these are the search terms Internet surfers will use.

Q: Do you accept unsolicited copy?
A: No. Unless we have given you the go-ahead on your topic, please do not send us ANY material you have written. We will not read it. Our time has to be spent supporting and promoting the authors' work we have agreements with.

Q: I'm not a writer. How can I write a saleable e-book?
A: No worries! Once we've accepted your topic, we will provide you with a template in a Q&A format that will help you get your thoughts down on paper. Our on on-staff writer/editor will turn your good information into entertaining, readable prose.

Q: Will I be listed as the author?
A: Absolutely. Knowledge Base Publishing is the publisher, you are the author. This benefits you, because you will have a byline credit (publishing credit) and it benefits us because you are the expert on this topic.

Q: What if I am not an expert on anything?
A: We rarely find that this is so. It's amazing what people know that they don't KNOW they know. For instance, e-books have been written, and successfully sold, on topics such as how to take care of parrots, salsa dancing, learning the guitar, how to drop a Mustang engine into a Ford, how to create wedding favors, how to sell to libraries, and the list goes on. You probably have a dozen books in you. Click here for a topic idea generator.

Q: Where will my e-book be published?
A: On the Internet, but only to those who have purchased your e-book.

Q: Can someone who buys my e-book steal my idea and re-publish it elsewhere?
A: That is always a possibility, but it's unlikely. If they did, they would be breaking copyright laws. Our copyright is clearly displayed on all of our materials, and we regularly search for infringers.

Q: How long should an e-book be?
A: As long as the subject matter dictates, and no longer. Most of our e-books are 10-100 pages, sometimes less, sometimes more. When it answers the questions a reader is likely to pose, you're done writing.

Q: Do I need to add graphics, photos or diagrams?
A: We do ask for an author's photo for your bio to include on Web sites promoting your book. Additional graphics, photos and diagrams are always appreciated, if they help explain your subject matter, because they will help sell your book.

Q: How long will it take to get my e-book published?
A: Once we approve your rough draft (we won't ask you to rewrite it, but we may have some questions after the first pass), our team spends a week to 10 days rewriting it and formatting it. We send it to you for accuracy, then we begin to market, publish and sell it. Usually your book will be published (available for sale) no more than three weeks after we approve your rough draft. How soon that is depends on how well you are able to distill your subject matter into a solid first draft.

Q: How soon before I get my first royalty check?
A: We pay our authors monthly, by the 10th of each month. Provided your book is selling, you should receive your first check by the 10th of the first full month following publication.

Q: Who determines the price of my e-book?
A: We do, based on the market. We'll get you the most we can because it's to our advantage to price it at the top of the market. We'll let you know up front how we will price it, and it will be part of your writer's agreement. If you don't agree, you are under no obligation to sign the agreement.

Q: What is a typical e-book price?
A: $10-$100 is not uncommon. People are generally willing to pay MORE for an e-book than for a traditional book. The reason is, they know that it's exactly what they're looking for and they can get it delivered to their computer now. Another advantage to the e-book format over print versions is that we can include hot links to additional resources when applicable.

Q: How do I know if my topic is saleable?
A: Leave that to us. If we don't think we can sell it, we will be very upfront with you before you do any work.

Q: How much money can I make?
A: It depends on many factors, but we won't take on a topic that won't make you money. Usually early returns are lower, and then momentum picks up (as more search engines find your e-book), which increases sales. Sales will obviously fluctuate from month to month.

Q: Who owns the rights to my e-book?
A: We purchase all rights. However, you own your brain! If you want to create a non-competing product with the same or similar information, with your own format and word usage, that is your choice.

Q: What if my e-book doesn't sell?
A: Most likely that won't happen. We carefully research the market before entering into any agreement, simply due to the upfront costs we incur. Because of that, we can say with confidence (though of course cannot guarantee) that you will achieve some level of sales. On top of this, we also provide additional income-producing opportunities when it makes sense, by offering related items for sale on the site we create for you. We also split these proceeds 50/50 with you.

Q: How much do you charge authors?
A: Nothing out of pocket. We pay our authors a 50% royalty on sales of their e-books, after an initial set-up fee of $250 (this is taken from the first proceeds; you do not pay it out-of-pocket). The $250 covers the cost of your Web site design, hosting, and advertising. There will never be any additional costs no matter what our costs are to create, package, distribute and market it.Traditional book publishers, if they offer royalties, will generally only pay 2-5% of profits (net, after expenses). And remember, we're taking all of the risk, and covering all expenses related to creating and promoting your e-book.

Q: What if my book never sells enough to pay the set-up fee?
A: That is our loss, and a risk we take when doing business. You will never be charged.

Q: How can you pay such a higher royalty percentage (50% vs. 2-5%) than traditional publishers?
A: Our electronic format saves on printing costs, and because we work with many authors, we have a distribution and marketing system in place, which lowers our risk to an acceptable level.

Q: How do I know I'm really getting all my royalties?
A: Our success depends on creating and maintaining outstanding relationships with our authors. Together with your monthly royalty check, you will receive a sales record with your book title clearly showing what sales were made and when. In addition, every time a sale is made, you will receive an e-mail notification automatically.

Q: How long am I committed to my contract?
A: We ask for an agreement of three years, or until we can no longer sell your book at an acceptable level (this is at our discretion), whichever comes first. But since the only obligation you have, after providing the rough draft and signing the author's agreement, is cashing checks, we don't think you'll have a problem with that! If sales fall below an acceptable level, we will notify you. We reserve the right to cancel our agreement with you at any time. And if your e-book is still selling well after three years, and both parties agree, we can sign an extension of your agreement at that time.

Q: What do I do if my e-book sales drop off?
A: We try to make sure this never happens through continuing marketing efforts, and of course our market research beforehand. However we strongly encourage our authors to create side topics related to, but not identical to, their original topic so you are not dependant on any one income stream. For instance, if you wrote a book on how to restore antique bicycles, a side topic might be how to hold an antique bicycle rally. We create marketing lists generated by the sales of your books, and will market your additional related topics to that list, increasing your chance to make additional sales. Even better, if you can write on two related topics at once, we can often create two sales simultaneously. Once a person has their credit card out to buy, adding a second related item is often an easy decision. Remember: It's in OUR best interest that YOU be successful!
